04. February Threads

With routines settled and the city beginning to feel more active again, these are the team’s considered picks in London to carry you through the month.

Opening on the 11th of February at White Cube in Bermondsey, ‘Echo’ marks Klára Hosnedlová’s debut solo exhibition with the gallery, running through to the 29th of March. The Berlin-based Czech artist explores ideas of self-reflection across historical, political and cultural contexts, working through architectural structures with embroidered craft techniques. Moving between large-scale sculpture, installation and performance, the exhibition unfolds as an immersive environment that feels both personal and monumental, inviting a slower way of looking this month.

From the 17th of February, Chiharu Shiota: Threads of Life opens at the Hayward Gallery, until the 3rd of May. Known for her expansive installations that envelop everyday objects such as shoes, beds and doors in dense webs of woollen thread, Shiota’s work draws out themes of memory, life and human connection. Floor-to-ceiling structures fit the gallery’s brutaist exteriors, amplifying the fragility at the centre of her practice. The exhibition is accompanied by Shiota’s ‘During Sleep’ performance, which will take place throughout the run.

A final February note comes from Raven Row, presenting ‘Conceptual Art’ and Christine Kozlov from the 19th of February to the 26th of April. Bringing attention to the American artist’s work and writing, the exhibition traces her influence within the conceptual art movement, offering a quieter and more introspective counterpoint to the month’s larger-scale shows.

As we begin to adjust to the cool weather, February offers moments of reflection and curiosity. These exhibitions sit comfortably within that in between spaces of calendar events and celebrations – best visited without rush and followed by our seasonal drink offering at Café Vins: Osmanthus Tea Latte.
