03. An uncomplicated approach to uniform : ECKHAUS LATTA

How Eckhaus Latta turns everyday clothing into a shared language of community and repetition.

Exploring uniformity not as a tool for conformity, but through constants. Uniform, in this sense, refers to something unchanging in form and character, defining a natural wardrobe built for repetition rather than costume. New York and Los Angeles-based brand Eckhaus Latta realises this idea of ‘uniform’ as clothing for everyday wear, not everyday rules – reworking classic shapes and familiar silhouettes through unique dyeing, tailoring, and textile play.

Beginning with the design philosophy of “making clothes by friends, for friends,” the brand has developed collections for the movers and makers, steering away from rigid fashion archetypes towards an uncomplicated approach to fashion design. Rather than seeing ‘uniform’ as a constraint, Eckhaus Latta treats clothing as a shared visual and cultural language, emphasising real people with diverse identities and ways of dressing. In this sense, clothes signal belonging to a community alike, rather than conformity to fashion industry standards or trends.

This approach is evident in recent collections, where Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta transform the everyday on the runway. Normal clothing functions are reimagined, from the placement of a zipper moved to the outer seam of a pant leg rather than the crotch, to deliberately wrinkled trousers that carry a lived-in quality. These gestures shift focus away from perfection, allowing wear, time, and use to become part of the design itself.

Rooted in community and real lives, Eckhaus Latta’s ‘uniform’ is not a single look but a way of working. Clothing becomes an ongoing, wearable conversation shaped by how people live in it, rather than how it is styled or directed. This ethos allows the designers to step back, understanding “when the period is at the end of the sentence,” and letting both the models and wearers complete the collection through use and repetition.

This philosophy is especially evident in the brand’s Fall 2025 ready to wear collection, described as “not based on a moodboard; this is based on how we see the world and combine that together in conversation.” Here, uniformity emerges not from control or sameness, but from shared perspective, an uncomplicated wardrobe formed through constants, community, and everyday life.
